Everyone is looking at Kader. It’s a hot spring morning in New York City, and the 22-year-old skater is gliding through Tompkins Square Park with an ease that’s noticeable, even to people who don’t spend most of their time on a board.
As Kader weaves over the worn concrete, other skaters pause mid-line to watch. Some whisper his name, others openly film him on their phones. All are visibly awed by the way he makes even the most difficult tricks look casual.
The California native has become one of the most recognizable faces in skateboarding, known for his fluid style, technical prowess, and a presence that feels at once laid-back and undeniable. He’s a recent New York transplant, having moved here just two years ago. “I was done with LA. I’ve been there my whole life and kind of seen everything skating-wise. It was getting boring,” he says. Here, the energy feels different: more spontaneous, more raw. He likes that he can skate a spot in the morning and be at an event or a party by night. “Out here, you never really know what the day’s gonna turn into,” he says. “That’s what makes it fun.”

Artists and writers explore Sylvia Wynter’s postcolonial dismantling of origin myths and cosmologies
According to the influential Jamaican writer and cultural theorist Sylvia Wynter, "we humans cannot pre-exist our origin myths any more than a bee can pre-exist its beehive." Drawing inspiration from her seminal essays "The Ceremony Must Be Found" (1984) and "The Ceremony Found" (2015), Ceremony draws on Wynter’s thinking to suggest that "modernity," contrary to its own self-image as rational and secular, is also determined by origin myths that emerged through the "mutations" of Christian cosmology after the dawn of capitalism in the Middle Ages. With over 25 contributions and commentaries on Wynter’s propositions from artists and writers, this publication constitutes a critical reference point for those seeking to construct and envisage a "counter-cosmogony" to the dispossession, slavery and extractivism of modernity that so endanger planetary life for humankind.
The first publication on the Kenyan collective exploring colonial erasure and the future of architecture in the age of the Anthropocene
This fifth volume in Lars Müller’s Architect’s Studio series is dedicated to the Nairobi-based architects Cave_bureau. This acclaimed collective of architects and researchers—the first Kenyan firm to appear at the Venice Architecture Biennale, in 2021—explores the synergy between architecture, urbanism and nature, and curates performative events of resistance within caves along the Great Rift Valley in East Africa. The cave, as physical space and as metaphor, is seen by the collective as a provocation to test the limits of contemporary architecture.
Here, Cave_bureau’s Stella Mutegi and Kabage Karanja describe eight of their projects. Stunning photography is accompanied by essays posing questions about the future of architecture in the age of the Anthropocene, the effects of colonial extraction and erasure on African architecture, as well as the specificity of each continent and each geographic space.
New photographs from Solkær’s internationally acclaimed series on the natural migration patterns of starlings
A sequel to Søren Solkær’s previous monograph Black Sun, Starling chronicles the photographer’s return to the landscape of his childhood and youth in southern Denmark. In a similar manner to prior projects, he spent three years following and photographing the migration of the starling: from Ireland to Denmark and the Netherlands along the Wadden Sea and on to Sardinia and Rome. The starlings move as one unified organism that vigorously opposes any outside threat. Shapes and black lines of condensation form within the swarm, resembling waves of interference or mathematical abstractions written across the horizon. The graphic and organic shapes of the starling murmurations range from meditative to highly dramatic as they perform their incredible ballet of life and death. This time, Solkær approaches the phenomenon from a mythological and scientific angle. These new perspectives capture the birds’ movements against backgrounds such as Roman urban architecture. Additionally, Solkær creates two new series of photographs featuring starling feathers photographed through a microscope.
